We hope everyone has a magical experience on their adventures this summer. It’s a time for making new friends and reconnecting with old ones. The ways in which you’ll have heaps of fun are too many to name.

But trips might also bring back some memories of dealing with cancer. That can be hard

That’s why, in partnership with specialist youth mental health charity Mind Over Cancer, young people who need further support can join our free monthly mental wellbeing programme.

‘A hidden weight off my shoulders’

Running from October 2026 – May 2027, over the past three years the online groups have provided a space for more than 50 young people so far, to continue conversations from their trips with other young people who ‘get it’.

They’ll talk about some of the issues to do with living through and beyond cancer and get tools in place to look after their mental wellbeing.

Morgan joined his third and final sailing adventure last summer and is looking forward to becoming a volunteer. But after that final trip, he joined the Mind Over Cancer sessions.

He said: “The sessions provided me with a safe and understanding place to discuss topics I would otherwise have buried in the back of my mind. They’ve taken a hidden weight off my shoulders and allowed me to continue looking over cancer as an experience rather than something holding me back.

Applications are open now

Apply now on our Mind Over Cancer page, which has a full list of session dates and topics. You’ll also find the full eligibility criteria and more information.

The sessions are run Susie and Sue. Everyone who’s completed the programme so far can’t say enough positive things about them – they’re awesome!

Susie has over 25 years’ experience delivering mental health support to young people living through and beyond cancer. She’s also worked with us to train our team and volunteers in mental health first aid.

Sue Morgan MBE is a legend in the children and young people’s cancer world and is a Mind Over Cancer Trustee. A Nurse Consultant at Leeds Teaching Hospitals for over 30 years, she believes the services Mind Over Cancer offer helps give young people and their families the tools to cope with the challenges a cancer diagnosis brings, both during and after treatment.

If you are experiencing a serious mental health crisis, including self-harm or suicidal thoughts, contact your GP or the Samaritans urgently. The Signposting page on our website also provides links to several mental health organisations where you can get the appropriate support.

Reflecting on Mind Over Cancer's sessions, Morgan continued: “Unlike cancer treatment, a cancer journey has no defined end. During treatment it’s easy to acquire lots of demons and at the end of treatment you just put them in a box and think nothing of them. What you don’t realise is these demons are holding you back. Mind Over Cancer helps you overcome these demons in a safe, no judgment environment.”
