Freelance Skippers

Could you do something incredible and use your passion for sailing to inspire young people to believe in a brighter future living though and beyond cancer?

Each year the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust contracts Freelance Skippers to work on our sailing trips from Cowes and Largs between June and October. As a Skipper, you have overall responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of the crew, the safety and security of the vessel and its equipment at all times.

Supported by a Mate and a Crew Leader you will help the young people we work with feel safe on the yachts, learn some sailing skills, socialise with their peers, and most importantly have an unforgettable time. Socialising and playing games throughout the trip are as important as the sailing, and there are usually a few water fights along the way too! Each trip has a flotilla of between three and six boats so you need to be happy working as part of a larger team

"It’s the best sailing and the best experience you will ever have, You will never laugh so much, you might not cry so much, you definitely have to learn to play Uno, but it gives you something that is indefinable and absolutely beautiful." Liz, Trust Skipper.

What you need...

To fulfil the role of Skipper on board an Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust trip, you must hold a commercially-endorsed Yachtmaster with a minimum of a Cruising Instructor endorsement, and at least 3 years experience of skippering yachts of 40ft+. Experience working with young people is highly desirable. The trips are a huge amount of fun with an underpinning focus on safety. An enhanced DBS / PVG check will be required as part of the process.

We value equality, diversity and inclusion and oppose prejudice. We strive to be more representative of all of the young people we support from across the UK and are committed to being an anti-racist organisation.
