As a special Return To Sail project for 2017, 100 young people who have sailed with the Trust in recovery from cancer will join us for this national relay challenge Round Britain to celebrate achievement and potential.
Every week during May and September, our 44ft voyage yacht, Moonspray, will dock at a major coastal town or city to handover to the next crew of local young people.
The young crew will all fully embrace the rigours of offshore sailing. They will enjoy sunrises and sunsets they could only have dreamt of, experience nature and see scenery and marine life at its most breathtaking and wild, and feel part of something truly unique in a close-knit team.
But this voyage is about more than sailing. During each stopover, the crewmembers will also be involved with number of local events and activities and will visit other young people still on treatment to support them in imagining a positive future.
The voyage’s four skippers and medics have all sailed with the Trust for many years and Hannah Spencer (Mate) and Tom Roberts (Media) were themselves both introduced to sailing through the Trust in their recovery from cancer. Dame Ellen will also be checking in at different stopovers, supporting the young crews as well as helping to raise the profile of their stories to inspire others.
Round Britain is about a lot more than sailing – it is about rebuilding the confidence, self-belief and independence of those involved – bringing back in to focus positive options which have been unimaginable during treatment.
