Longtown Outdoor Centre

Get your 2024 Trust fix early in May half-term. Woodland adventures, toasting marshmallows, gorge walking, stand-up paddleboarding, wild camping, going underground and so much more on the England and Wales border.

This is a trip for under 18s

Scaling new heights

Running during May half-term, Longtown Outdoors is a trip with a difference.

With easy access to the stunning Brecon Beacons National Park, the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Wales' Black Mountains, no day is ever the same.

One of the biggest things young people tell us they love about this trip is building shelters, doing bush crafts and toasting marshmallows around campfires in Longtown's unique woodland.

Then there's the caving, gorge walking and and stand-up paddleboarding too! This is a five-day, four night adventure for up to 27 young people.

2024 trip date

I am so grateful to you for giving my son this opportunity. It will be his summer holiday."

The other big Longtown questions...

What medical information do you need?

Your medical information comes from the medical and consent form you fill in prior to the trip, so make sure you include all relevant, up to date medical and non-medical information you feel we should know about.

How many others will be on this trip?

There will be up to 30 young people on this under 18s trip.

How accessible is this trip?

Longtown has broad experience of adapting land and water-based activities to make them accessible and all-inclusive. The centre would work with us and anyone living with disabilities to develop appropriate activities and programmes. You can read all about Longtown's approach here - Accessibility.

I still get really tired or lack energy. Will this stop me coming?

No way! All our staff and volunteers understand the after-effects of cancer, including fatigue, can last a long time. They can make sure you get as many rest breaks as you need. You will be encouraged to join in all the activities, but won’t be forced to do anything you won’t be able to manage. We always also try to put young people into groups with similar abilities, so no one feels left out. You will surprise yourself.

What do I need to bring?

Not as much as you think! Closer to the time of your trip we will send you a full kit list containing all the information you need. You won’t need any specialist clothing, waterproofs, wetsuits or safety equipment – the centre will provide all that - just normal clothes, including some warm layers and shoes you don’t mind getting wet. You will basically live in joggers/leggings, a hoodie and your Trust trip t-shirt! We also always have plenty of high-factor sun cream on all of our trips.

Where do I sleep?

We will update the below to reflect what will happen in 2022 once next summer's trip plans have been finalised.

You will be staying in same sex, shared bedrooms or dorm rooms. There is plenty of sleeping space at Longtown to make sure everyone can be socially distanced.

Should I bring my phone and spending money?

Any phones or valuable electronic equipment are bought along entirely at your own risk and we cannot be responsible for any loss or damage. We recommend these are left at home, but do understand you may want to bring them along for the journey. Our staff and volunteers will have phones you can use to phone home if necessary and Trust contact will be provided to family and friends should they need to get in touch while you’re away. Everything is provided so you only need enough money for any extra snacks or souvenirs you want to buy. We suggest no more than £20.

Rosa's Story

It’s a chance to learn and develop in a really understanding way, where no one’s going to yell at you or tell you off, but guide you and help you as well.

From being supported after leukaemia to volunteering and being part of the Youth Advisory Group, it's all been about getting involved and an 'I can do it' attitude for Rosa.
