Back in the summer, the Trust welcomed the 36th presenter of the long-running show, the lovely Lindsay Russell, on board a trip for the day, to see the difference support from Children in Need makes to young lives.
The support from Children in Need goes towards funding first-time trips for under 18s from the Trust’s south coast base on the Isle of Wight.
As you can imagine the 27 young people on the trip, were thrilled to hear they would be joined by the Blue Peter crew on the last day of their sailing adventure on the Solent. (29 August).
There was a buzz of excitement on the pontoons in Yarmouth as the film crew arrived by RIB, everyone was very star struck. 🤩
The young people on Solent Hero welcomed Lindsay on board and showed her the ropes teaching her all that they had learnt so far during their trip.
For the first time, hospital seemed like a world away as 11- year-old Emmanuel, who finished his treatment for Burkitt lymphoma earlier this year, taught his new crewmate Lindsay how to helm. He didn’t stop singing or smiling all day.
Amelie, meanwhile, who is in recovery from a brain tumour aged 13, opened up and told Lindsay all about the horrible hospital food she had to eat during treatment.
After enjoying several hours on the Solent, it was time to head back to the Trust’s base in East Cowes. But we couldn’t let Lindsay get away with returning to dry land without experiencing a famous Trust water fight.
Lindsay felt completely moved after spending the day with the young people, she wrote on her Instagram: “I’ve just had the best day filming with the most beautiful group of kids. I genuinely don’t think I’ve laughed or smiled this much in ages.
“To see them all so happy and healthy, sailing around the Isle of Wight with their new friends was emotional. It’s the most amazing project, run by some pretty special people. I’m genuinely so moved by the day I’ve just had.”
To top it off the 27 young people on the trip were all awarded a legendary Blue Peter badge. What an incredible day!
A special thanks to all the supporters of Children in Need – you make our life-changing Trust trips possible 💛
