It was back in February 2005, when the crew of Associate got together to complete their sea survival course, that it was decided that the crew would do more than just the Fastnet Race, as big a
challenge as it is, and also raise money for Sail4Cancer and The Ellen MacArthur Trust.
It was particularly pertinent to the entire Crew as one member has recently been personally affected as have two other members with very close relations being treated for the disease.
There was little motivation needed to get on with the task and to seek pledges from friend’s colleagues and customers. Ian Duke gained support from his employer Barclays Bank who pledged to match £ for £ the amount raised by Ian up to £750.
Overwhelmed by the support that all the crew have received the total of money raised quickly passed £3,000 and includes a very generous donation of £500 from the Williams F1 Grand Prix Team and the personal good wishes of Patrick Head.
David Couper, our GP on board, has convinced his fellow doctors to sponsor him a £ for every mile. They have yet to work out we won’t be able to sail a straight line!
We are all pleased and proud to be raising money for Ellen MacArthur Trust and wish them every success in bringing hope and a smile to those affected.
