Day Two: Skandia Cowes Week 2007

5th August 07

Scarlet Oyster started well today as they took on the second day of racing in IRC Class 5, after finishing 42nd yesterday, they maintained their form finally finishing 47th out of 58 boats racing. At present Scarlet Oyster is waiting a correction for it’s rating, as it is not sailing with a spinnaker the only boat in the class to do so.

After finding their feet yesterday, the four crew aged between 14 and 16 had the best day’s racing so far, the class sailed a shorter course today which was a welcome relief given the temperatures in Cowes reaching the high twenties.

“Today was just fantastic, although it was great to have another sunny day out on the water, the weather was really humid making it very hot and sticky onboard. We had lots of downwind sailing and everyone really got stuck in. We felt like a real team today and I know we can do even better tomorrow”, said Emma.

On Land:

The stand had another great day as more people took on the sailing simulator, hoping to beat some of the times set by the professional sailors who are on the leader board on the “Star in a reasonably priced dinghy!” The Trust lanyards with Liz Earle sunscreen are selling well as people support The Trust and to protect their skin in the blistering temperatures that Cowes experienced today. Raffle tickets are also selling fast, with the chance to sail onboard one of the most exciting boats racing at this year’s regatta, the Extreme 40. At 40-foot long, these lightweight carbon fibre catamarans can reach exhilarating speeds of up to 40 knots (just under 50 miles per hour).

For more information visit The Ellen MacArthur Trust stand located on Cowes Parade, open from 10am until 8pm each day,
