We have 55 places available in this year’s Bupa Great South Run, a 10 mile road race, which is just as suited to the international elite runner as it is to the recreational jogger. As one of the UK’s most popular running events, the flat and scenic course through Southsea, Portsmouth takes you past much of Britain’s naval heritage, including HMS Victory and HMS Warrior.

This year’s run takes place on the 28th October, and around 21,000 runners are expected to line up on the day to take on the challenge.  We are asking that runners aim to raise a minimum of £150 sponsorship, and runners will also be asked to pay the £40 entry fee.  Every runner will also receive a branded running top to wear on the day.  Each runner, and their families and friends are also invited to join us at our lunch to enjoy some well-deserved refreshments after the race.

In 2011, Gemma, who has previously sailed with the Trust, took part in the Great South Run. Gemma said: “The Great South Run is an amazing experience!  From the group warm-up at the starting line to the sense of achievement at finish line, it’s such an amazing day that needs to be experienced by everyone!  The combination of the sense of achievement when you finish and knowing that you are fundraising and creating awareness for the Trust is incredible.  It was an amazing opportunity to give something back to the Trust and to make a difference to those who will be invited on the trips in the future.”

Frank Fletcher, the Trust CEO explained the importance of fundraisers to the Trust: “Our fundraisers make such a difference to our work and we really do appreciate every penny that people donate to us. It costs £500 for The Trust to take one young person sailing on a four-day trip, and we would be thrilled if people were interested in joining our team and helping to raise vital funds for young people in recovery from cancer through the Great South Run.”

It couldn’t be easier to register your interest in running for the Trust. To register or for more details please email mari-louise.white@emcancertrust.org or call 01983 297750.

TESTIMONIALS

“Joe enjoyed the whole trip but sailing with Ellen was the highlight. Joe will be back hopefully next year and I know when he is 18 he will volunteer. It was lovely to see him looking forward to something so much. Thank you so much for asking Joe on the trip. Words cannot express our gratitude. It was something we talked about when Joe was very ill in hospital. Just pleased his dream did come true!”
